Newborn Sessions

HOW DO I BOOK A NEWBORN SESSION?

Once you've decided to book you newborn session I'll mark your due date in my calendar just so I know it's coming up! When your baby arrives just send me a a quick note within few days if possible and we'll set it up for ideally within 2 weeks of birth. Most newborn sessions end up being on weekdays around mid-day, especially in the summer months.

WHERE WILL THE SESSION TAKE PLACE?

All my newborn sessions take place in the comfort of your home. I use rooms like the master bedroom, living room, nursery or which ever space gets the most natural light as the backdrop. Outdoor newborn sessions are available in the Spring + Summer as well.

WHAT IS A LIFESTYLE SESSION?

A lifestyle newborn session focuses more on the interaction between the new baby, their family and their new surroundings. I will direct you and tell you what to do with your hands but I try and keep it casual and natural looking. No elaborate dressing up or posing of the newborn. Babies are clothed or wrapped for the session, so no naked bums. There will be lots of images of the family interacting with the new baby and lots with Mom and Dad and any big sisters or brothers, fur siblings too of course!

WHAT IF OUR HOME IS TOO DARK?

The amount of natural (window) light your home gets does have an impact on how much of your home we can use for the session. We'll pick the rooms we shoot in based on the size of the windows and the amount of natural light they have. If you live in a basement suite or if you find your home gets very little natural light then an in home session might not be right for you.

All homes do have at least some windows though! I've always found a way to make it work, however in dark homes it can get tricky.

I usually end up picking one spot by a window and doing the majority of the photos there.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO HAVE MY NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHED?

Timing is important when it comes to newborn photography.  Sessions tend to go smoother when the baby is within 14 day of birth. They're still in the super sleepy stage during that period so they tend to take all the moving around and positioning a little better.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?

A typical newborn shoot takes about two hours. There's usually a few breaks for feeding and snuggles.

WILL YOU BRING PROPS?

I bring one prop, like a basket or crate, and a blanket. This is for a solo shot of the baby in case your place doesn't have a well lit spot to put baby down by themselves and I need to create something:) Every home is different so I come prepared! but I do prefer to photograph babies in a more natural environment like on a bed or other furniture that's already in your home.

I'll also bring my ever evolving collection of wraps.

DO YOU BRING STUDIO LIGHTS AND BACKDROPS?

I don't use studio lights. Instead I use windows in your home as my natural light source. The backdrop will be rooms in your home as well. Most often the master bedroom, nursery and living room. Don't worry about making your house magazine ready! I know things can be chaotic when you first bring your baby home. We'll tidy up and move things around as needed. The majority of homes have enough natural light, however if you find your home very dark during the day this type of session might not be the best for you. If you're not sure feel free to send me photos.

Once your session is booked I'll send you a link to my Newborn Session Guide to answer any more questions that might come up!
