Welcoming a new baby is one of the most magical moments, and capturing those first weeks is even more special when it happens in a place with sentimental value. Baby K’s newborn session was held at her parents’ newly purchased acreage in Cranbrook, BC. This property will undoubtedly see many transformations over the years, but how cool is it to have photos showing it as it was when they first brought her home and started their family?

For this session, we decided to do a mix of indoor and outdoor shots. Combining both can be a bit tricky depending on the time of year and lighting, but trust me—it’s worth the effort!

Tips for Indoor and Outdoor Newborn Photos

When planning an outdoor session, aim for those golden hours—the last few hours before sunset. That’s when the sunlight is soft and flattering. But keep in mind that natural light indoors is typically best earlier in the day or mid-afternoon, depending on your home’s layout. For Baby K’s session, we discovered that their living room was brightest in the late afternoon, making it the perfect spot to start.

Indoor Newborn Photos:

We kicked things off inside, keeping things cozy and intimate. Baby K wore a simple onesie and was wrapped in a wrap blanket, showing off her tiny fingers and toes. Keeping newborns warm and comfortable is key—nobody wants a fussy baby during a shoot!  We also got to showcase some meaningful items in their home, like a beautiful vintage bassinet and their wedding photos in the background. These little touches added so much personality to the session and made it even more special.

Outdoor Newborn Photos:

A cold baby is a fussy baby so once we transitioned outside, we bundled Baby K up in a sentimental family blanket to keep her snug. Outdoor shots often have more movement, which is fantastic if you have toddlers or pets to include in the photos. One standout moment was capturing Baby K next to a classic car her dad had been photographed with as a baby—such a sweet generational touch!

Thinking About an Indoor/Outdoor Newborn Session?

If you’re considering a session at home and love the idea of blending indoor and outdoor shots, let your photographer know ahead of time. This gives them a chance to plan for the best light and settings to make your photos shine.

Being a Cranbrook newborn photographer means I get to document not just your little one, but the spaces and moments that matter most to you. Whether it’s your cozy living room or a beautiful backyard, every detail adds to the story.
